Introducing the Ladder of Growth…
The Ladder of Growth: A Framework for Supporting Your Clients
As therapists, healers, and coaches, guiding clients on their healing journey can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the biggest hurdles? Understanding where they are and what they need most at this stage of their journey.
That’s where the Head Trash Ladder of Growth™ comes in.
The Ladder of Growth is a simple yet powerful framework that maps out the stages clients move through on their path to emotional growth and healing.
Whether your client is feeling stuck in patterns of anxiety and self-sabotage or they’re ready to step into their fullest potential, the Ladder of Healing provides clarity about where they are and what will help them move forward.
A Tool for Professionals, Backed by Real-World Insights
I first introduced this concept in my book, Clear Your Head Trash, after noticing recurring themes among my clients.
Over the years, I’ve refined this framework by observing how people progress through these stages — and it has become an invaluable tool for understanding and supporting their healing journey.
The Ladder of Growth has five stages: Conker, Washing Ball, Bouncy Ball, Snooker Ball, and Glitter Ball. Each stage reflects a specific level of emotional development, energy, and resilience.
As a professional, knowing where your client is on the ladder can:
- Help you tailor your approach to meet their unique needs.
- Provide clients with clarity and a sense of direction, reducing overwhelm.
- Highlight specific challenges they face, so you can address them more effectively.

Glitter Balls
Glitter Balls are the top of the ladder, radiating confidence and positivity.

- Possesses high energy and self-belief, making them natural leaders.
- Life flows easily, and they create success with minimal resistance.
Professional Focus:

Snooker Balls
Snooker Balls are grounded and purpose-driven, but they still wrestle with occasional self-sabotage.

Bouncy Balls
Bouncy Balls are energetic and curious but still emotionally inconsistent.
Client Traits:
- Shows interest in stepping outside their comfort zone but struggles with fear of failure.
- More productive and focused than Washing Balls, but still reactive to triggers.
- Prone to emotional ups and downs.
Professional Focus:
Support clients in building emotional resilience and consistency. Healing modalities can be particularly impactful here, as clients may feel ready to let go of their deeper wounds.
Washing Balls
Washing Balls are beginning to gain momentum but still feel stuck in repetitive cycles of stress and anxiety.
Client Traits:
- Struggles with self-sabotage and unhelpful patterns.
- Tends to rely on caffeine or other stimulants to get through the day.
- Feels like they’re going round in circles with the same challenges.
Professional Focus:
Help clients build self-belief, break out of repetitive patterns, and develop healthier habits. Introducing healing modalities can be effective for reducing overwhelm.

Conkers
Conkers are at the base of the ladder, often weighed down by emotional wounds and self-doubt.
Client Traits:
- Struggles with anxiety, depressive episodes, and emotional sensitivity.
- Difficulty focusing, often due to sleep issues and emotional overwhelm.
- Prone to conflicts in relationships, guilt, and fear of rejection.
Professional Focus:
Clients at this stage need emotional safety and support to begin addressing their wounds. Therapy and structured guidance are often most effective here.
